Instagram Reels ads are full-screen vertical video ads that appear between organic Reels as people scroll. For most small and mid-sized advertisers they are now the cheapest way to reach a cold audience on Meta: in our experience, Reels placements typically deliver a lower CPM than Feed and Stories, with the trade-off that attention is shorter and the creative has to work in the first two seconds. If your Meta campaigns run on Advantage+ placements, you are almost certainly already paying for Reels impressions, so the real question is not whether to use Reels ads but whether your creative is built for them.
This guide covers the current specs, what Reels ads cost in the US and Europe, how to set them up in Ads Manager, and a creative checklist we use before anything goes live. It is written for business owners and in-house marketers, not for creators chasing views.
Instagram Reels ads specs (what actually matters)
Meta’s official Reels ad specs are the source of truth and change periodically, so check them before a big production. The parts that matter in practice:
| Element | Recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px) | Anything else gets letterboxed and reads as an ad instantly |
| Length | Keep under 15 seconds for cold traffic; up to 30 s for retargeting | Reels viewers skip fast; the longer format is allowed but rarely watched |
| Safe zones | Leave roughly the top 14% and bottom 35% free of text | Profile name, caption, and CTA button overlay those areas |
| Sound | Designed for sound on, understandable with sound off | Reels plays audio by default, but captions still lift completion |
| File | MP4 or MOV, H.264, under 4 GB | Standard export from any editor |
| Primary text | Under 72 characters visible | Longer text is truncated behind “more” |
| CTA | Shop Now, Learn More, Sign Up, Book Now | Appears as a button at the bottom of the Reel |
One detail that trips up many advertisers: Reels ads can run on both Instagram and Facebook Reels, and the Facebook placement has slightly different overlays. If you use Advantage+ placements, upload a 9:16 asset and let Meta’s placement customization handle the rest. If you use manual placements, select Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels explicitly and check previews for each.
How much do Instagram Reels ads cost?
Reels is priced through the same auction as every other Meta placement, so there is no separate “Reels price.” What we see in accounts across the US and Western Europe in 2026 is a consistent pattern: Reels CPMs run below Feed CPMs for the same audience, often noticeably, because inventory is large and still growing faster than advertiser demand. The cost per result, however, depends on whether your creative earns the click.
| Market | Typical Reels CPM range (cold prospecting) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $6 – $14 | Higher in Q4 and in finance, insurance, and B2B niches |
| United Kingdom | £5 – £11 | Similar to US for ecommerce; lower for local services |
| Germany, Netherlands, France | €4 – €10 | Lower reach costs, but conversion rates vary by market |
| Spain, Italy | €3 – €7 | Cheapest reach in Western Europe; good for awareness tests |
These are directional ranges from accounts we manage, not Meta benchmarks. For a full breakdown of Feed, Stories, and Reels pricing and how it changes by month, see our Facebook ads cost guide for 2026. The practical takeaway is that a €20 to €30 per day test budget buys several thousand Reels impressions per day in most EU markets, which is enough to judge creative within a week.
Setting up Instagram Reels ads in Ads Manager
- Pick the objective. Sales for ecommerce, Leads for service businesses, Traffic only if you truly cannot track conversions. Make sure the Meta Pixel and Conversions API are both firing before you spend anything; Reels traffic skews toward in-app browsing where Pixel-only tracking loses events.
- Choose the campaign type. For ecommerce, an Advantage+ Shopping campaign with Reels-specific creative in the asset mix is usually the simplest route. For leads, a manual Sales or Leads campaign with Advantage+ placements gives you more control over the audience.
- Set placements. Advantage+ placements by default. Switch to manual only when you need to isolate Reels for a creative test; then select Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, and optionally Reels overlay ads.
- Audience. Broad (age, country, maybe gender) with Advantage+ audience on. Reels inventory is huge, so narrow interest stacks mostly raise CPM without improving quality. Use exclusions for existing customers.
- Creative. Upload 9:16 video, write primary text under 72 characters, choose a CTA, and link to a mobile-fast landing page. Enable Advantage+ creative enhancements selectively; test with music and brightness enhancements off first so you know what the raw creative does.
- Budget. Start at a daily budget that can produce at least 5 to 10 conversions per week per ad set, otherwise the algorithm cannot optimize. If that number is out of reach, optimize for a higher-funnel event like Add to Cart or Lead form opens.
Reels creative checklist
Creative decides 70 to 80 percent of the outcome on Reels in our experience, far more than audience settings. Before launch, each ad should pass these checks:
- Hook in the first 1 to 2 seconds. Show the product in use, a surprising before/after, or a bold text claim. No logos, no slow intros.
- Native look. Phone-shot footage, a real voice, fast cuts. Polished TV-style spots underperform here because they signal “ad” instantly.
- Captions baked in. Text overlays inside the safe zones, not relying on Meta’s auto-captions.
- One message. One product, one benefit, one CTA. Multi-product montages dilute the click.
- Clear CTA on screen at the end. “Tap Shop Now” or “Link below” plus a reason: free shipping, 20% off, book today.
- Three to five variations. Different hooks, same offer. Reels fatigue sets in fast, and the winner is rarely the one you expected. Our creative testing framework explains how to structure the test so results are readable.
- Landing page mobile check. Load time under 3 seconds on 4G, price visible above the fold, one-tap checkout or short form.
Reels ads vs. Stories vs. Feed
Stories and Reels share the vertical format but behave differently. Stories reach your existing followers more and are strong for retargeting and promotions. Reels reach mostly non-followers and favor discovery and cold acquisition. Feed is the most expensive placement but gives you the longest consideration time and the best space for text. A balanced prospecting campaign usually runs all three with placement customization, then shifts budget toward whichever placement produces the lowest cost per purchase or lead over two to three weeks. Do not judge Reels on click-through rate alone: Reels CTR is often lower, while cost per result can still be better because reach is cheaper.
Who should use Instagram Reels ads
Reels ads work best for visual products and services: fashion, beauty, home goods, food, fitness, travel, and local businesses with something to show. We covered concrete playbooks for gyms and restaurants that lean heavily on Reels placements. B2B software and professional services can use Reels for awareness, but conversion-focused budgets there usually perform better on Feed and on Google Search.
FAQ
Do Reels ads need to be made as Reels, or can I use a normal video?
Any 9:16 video uploaded in Ads Manager can run as a Reels ad. You do not need to post an organic Reel first, though you can boost an existing Reel if it already performs well.
Can I use trending music in Reels ads?
Only tracks licensed for commercial use from Meta’s Sound Collection, or music you own the rights to. Popular commercial tracks available to organic Reels are not licensed for ads, and Meta will reject or mute the ad.
Are Reels ads skippable?
Yes. People scroll past them like any other Reel, which is why the first two seconds carry most of the weight. There is no forced view, and you pay per impression, not per completed view, in most campaign types.
What is a good Reels ad length?
Meta allows long Reels ads, but in our experience 6 to 15 seconds performs best for cold audiences, and 15 to 30 seconds for retargeting where the viewer already knows the brand.
Do Reels ads work for lead generation?
Yes, especially combined with Instant Forms, since the form opens inside the app and avoids a slow landing page. Expect lower lead quality than Search, so add qualifying questions to the form.
How do I measure Reels performance separately?
In Ads Manager, use Breakdown → Placement to see Reels results next to Feed and Stories. Compare cost per result and ThruPlay rate rather than CTR.
